Our New Patient Process
1. Your Initial Chiropractic Consultation
On your first visit to our office, you will be greeted by our warm, caring staff and asked to fill out our required forms. These forms help us understand you and your condition. When you meet the chiropractor, he or she will ask you questions about your condition and learn about your overall health.
2. Examination
After a thorough consultation, you will have an examination that will include testing of your reflexes, range of motion, and ability to turn and bend, as well as other standard orthopedic, neurological, postural, and physical examinations. Depending on your condition, you may be asked to change into an examination gown or shorts.
This examination provides us with valuable information about your condition.
If you have had x-rays already, your chiropractor will be able to view them online. If new X-rays are required, your chiropractor can refer you to them. Always remember, nothing will ever be done in our office without your consent.
3. Findings and Care Plan
Your chiropractor will first determine whether your condition is amenable to chiropractic treatment. Occasionally we see a patient who requires further testing. If that’s the case, we will refer you back to your family physician for further testing.
If your chiropractor believes that your condition will respond to care, then he or she will develop a plan of care for you. Your chiropractor will explain the findings of the assessment to you and discuss the treatment recommendations, ensuring your consent to treatment is informed, and your questions are answered.
4. Treatment
In some cases, treatment may begin on the first visit. Once you fully understand and agree to the plan of care, your treatment can begin. The length of treatment will vary for each person. Many patients will begin to feel better after a few visits; however, people who have more chronic pain may take longer to see results.
Chiropractic treatments may include:
- gentle adjustments
- trigger point release
- instrument assisted soft tissue therapy
- stretches and exercises
- spinal decompression
- low-level laser
- electrical muscle stimulation
Your practitioner will determine which services will be most effective for you. Many of our patients begin to see results from the very first treatment.
Your chiropractor will also work with you to establish goals to measure your progress. Chiropractors are trained to prescribe therapeutic exercises, prescribe nutritional counselling and recommend injury prevention strategies to help you participate in your care. You may receive advice on ergonomics at work, posture, sleep habits and other areas of concern.
5. Home Instructions
Before your appointment ends, you will be given instructions on certain activities or procedures to be conducted at home. This may include ice or heat application instructions, avoidance of certain activities or positions, and home exercises and stretches. Additional treatment options for your condition will also be discussed during this time.
6. Scheduling Your Next Appointment
Before you leave, our receptionist will discuss a convenient appointment time for your follow-up visit, if required. If you don’t have time to schedule your next appointment or aren’t sure of your schedule, you can always book your next appointment online.
